Behavior Consultations for Your Dog

Sometimes a behavior problem requires the expertise of a qualified animal behavior specialist and goes beyond the educational limits of a dog trainer. Our behavior specialist is Robert DeFranco, CBC certified canine behavior counselor (Association of Canine Behavior Counselors), Certified Master Trainer, member of the Animal Behavior Society, graduate student in Psychology (Walden University), Executive Director of the Animal Behavior Center of New York and president of the American Foundation for Animal Rescue, Inc. in New York City.

The job of the behaviorist is to:

  • Obtain a history of the animal.
  • Understand the inappropriate behavior as described by the owner(s).
  • Diagnose the problem.
  • Design a behavior modification program to change the behavior. This will usually include changes in the animals responding to stimuli, changes in the animal's environment and, in some extreme cases where fears, phobias, anxiety and aggression are genetically/neruochemically based, the use of a short-term psycho-pharmaceutical agent (we do this with your family veterinarian) to assist us with the treatment.
  • Instruct the owner(s) as to how to implement the behavior modification program.
  • Follow up the progress within a reasonable amount of time.

How to Obtain a Behavior Consultation:
To obtain a behavior consultation by telephone, call +1.718-205-0200 Monday through Friday, 10:00 A.M. through 7:00 P.M. E.S.T. Explain that you are responding to our web page and ask for a telephone consultation with the animal behaviorist. Leave your name, day and evening telephone number, your dog's name, breed, age, sex, sexual status (altered or intact) and a BRIEF description of the problem(s). Our behaviorist will telephone you collect as soon as possible. The consultation fee is $75.00 (1/2 of the regular in-person cost) and will include two e-mail follow-up calls. We accept all major credit cards.

Consultations On-Line:

Consultations can also be arranged at a specific date and time in our live chat room at: http://www.canines.com/chat/chatroom.shtml

When calling, indicate to our receptionist whether you desire a telephone or chatroom consultation.
