American Foundation
for Animal Rescue, Inc.

A Not-For-Profit 501C(3) Animal Welfare Organization

MISSION

The mission of the American Foundation for Animal Rescue, Inc. (AFAR) is to educate and inform the public about companion animal welfare issues, responsible companion animal ownership and caregiving, the link between domestic violence, child abuse and animal abuse, the importance of early behavior evaluation and obedience training for companion animals, the necessity to spay and neuter companion animals to prevent overpopulation which leads to abandonment, cruelty and euthanasia, and that companion animal ownership and caregiving is a lifetime comittment.

CURRENT OPERATIONS

AFAR operates the Queens Community Animal Shelter, a no-kill companion animal rescue shelter in Queens County in New York City. The shelter provides homeless and displaced companion animals with temporary shelter, food, human companionship, medical care, low cost spay-neuter services through local veterinarians and behavior training until a suitable home can be found through its adoption system. AFAR is a member of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals, Inc. and Petfinder.org.

AFAR operates the Animal Behavior Center of New York (ABCNY), a companion animal training and behavioral treatment facility, which provides low-cost companion animal training and behavioral treatment services to over 1200 dogs and cats in the tri-stae area each year.

ABCNY, through its agreement with the American Institute for Animal Science, an Iowa state-licensed private school, and the Association of Companion Animal Behavior Counnselors, provides seminars, workshops and a working internship program for students of applied companion animal behavior. Each year, over 100 students complete these programs and return to their U.S. and foriegn communities to train dogs in family obedience and also to treat dogs for abnormal behavior problems that, gone untreated, could jepardize their remaining in their homes with their human families.

RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

For over five years AFAR helped create and co-produced the public access television program Companion Animal Network that won the 1997 and 1999 National Hometown Video Award in the category Making a Difference. This television news magazine program exposes animal crime and cruelty and educated the public about responsible pet ownership. The show is now in reruns and can be seen throughout New York City and in 10 other cities in the United States.

Our "No-Kill" Queens Community Animal Shelter had a record year in 2002 having placed over 320 displaced or abandoned cats and dogs into good homes. We continue to accept stray, unwanted and displaced cats and dogs into our shelter when space allows. We also rescue dogs and cats scheduled for euthanasia from New York City's animal control system through a partnership agreement with the Center for Animal Care and Control. The animals are well cared for by our paid staff and volunteers, 365 days a year.

In 2002, our internship program at the Animal Behavior Center of New York sponsored by the Association of Companion Animal Behavior Counselors trained over 50 of their members to become Certified Canine Behavior Counselors and dog obedience trainers. The revenue from this program helps us to fund and operate our homeless animal shelter and other comunity programs.

FUTURE GOALS

New Happy Tails Doggie Day Care Center

We are in the final statges of constructing our Happy Tails Doggie Day Care Center for dogs. The facility will allow us to care for dogs who live with their families in the community during the day. Happy Tails will provide family dogs with socialization, behavioral stimulation, exercise and can also act as a treatment facility for the modification of unwanted behavior. The revenue from Happy Tails will help us to maintain our shelter operations and develop new community service programs for companion aniamls.

Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Operating Room

We have received a bid from a veterinary supply company to purchase the necessary equipment for a feral cat spay/neuter operating room at the Queens Community Animal Shelter. This OR would become the cornerstone of our Capture, Neuter and Release program in Queens County. A capital fundraising project will soon begin for this project. We already have the committment from several Queens County licensed veterinarians to perform pro bono spay/neuter operations several times a week. We are seeking a tax-deductable $10,000 donation from an individual, family or corporation to help to fund this project. The facilty would bear the name of this individual, family or corporation.
